Planning a Cedar Roof Barn wedding
Cedar Roof Barn is a fantastic barn wedding venue in Sussex that is perfect for planning a DIY wedding. It is a barn on a family-run working farm that is only available for specific times of the year. You can hire it as a near blank slate and put your own personality into your wedding. That’s what this amazing couple did for their pink themed wedding at Cedar Roof Barn. They chose to have a pink theme with hints of red inspired by the Swedish horse motive that celebrated the groom’s heritage. Both the bride and groom wore pink. The bride’s hot pink wedding dress was from Anthropologie, and the groom’s light pink suit was from Selected. The bride wore earrings from Wolf and Moon. Their custom wedding rings were made by themselves in the Posh Totty workshop.
Cool DIY wedding ideas
What’s the best reason for having a DIY wedding? If you’re creative you can really save money and add meaningful touches to your wedding. This couple managed to plan the whole wonderful wedding for under £12k! This was super impressive as they included loads of fun ideas for wedding guests. They cut costs down with the bride doing her own hair and make up. The bride also designed a lot of the decor herself, such as the custom wedding banner they had printed at Banner Department. Other personal quirky touches the couple brought to this wedding included having a bath tub bar, a doodle guestbook. Their ideas for 90s table top games was so good I copied it for my own wedding reception! They had Bintams Crazy Golf provide the mini golf set up.

Independent wedding celebrant ceremony
The hilarious and very personalised wedding ceremony was conducted by one of my favourite celebrants, Chloe Green. I’ve talked about why you might choose a wedding celebrant in my blog post about this outdoor wedding. An independent celebrant will take your personal wedding story custom write an entertaining service for you. They’ll also include personal options, like this couple chose to have a quiz in the ceremony! Chloe comes with the best suit fashions too, I’m always eyeing up her wardrobe! If you want a lovely progressive, inclusive celebrant based in London check her out.
The couple arrived for their celebrant wedding ceremony in a white car from Brooklands Wedding Cars. They met their wonderful poodle Attie out the front, who accompanied them into the ceremony. He was the bestest boy throughout the whole wedding!

Bubble confetti at a barn wedding reception in Sussex
After the wedding ceremony at Cedar Roof Barn, the guests all lined up ready for bubble confetti! This was one of the best bubble confetti exits I’ve ever seen! My major tip for creating the best bubble confetti wedding photos are to use the battery powered bubble guns. Literally the ones that have an easy trigger button for children! The mini hand bubble wands that look pretty and white don’t produce great bubbles that last. It’s also too slow for wedding guests to generate the volume of bubbles to fill the air with the speed you enter the wedding reception!

Mini golf hire for weddings
The mini golf was a hit at this wedding! They ran a tournament board too, and several of the competitive guests had a few goes to try and top the leaderboard. Instead of a wedding polaroid they had the camera game on a vintage gameboy color. They had a grazing bagel station provided by the wonderful Antipasto By the Sea.

They also put out a table tennis table for guests to enjoy, and various lawn games. Attie the dog got very involved in the golf, he loved trying to take the golf balls!

Taking couple photos at a barn wedding in Sussex
When having a barn wedding, there’s several options for taking wedding photos. You can use some of the natural panelling of the barn, or usually there’s fields around where you keep it natural. During the drinks reception of this wedding the sun was quite strong, so usually during the harsh daylight hours I stick to shade or making use of architecture to create softer photos. I then ask the couple to come out later in the day to take golden hour photos. We took wedding photos with their dog as the guest of honour 🙂

Hiring a wedding caricaturist
I’ve definitely seen a rise in hiring a wedding caricaturist. It’s a fun idea that works to both amuse guests, and provide them a wedding favour to take home. This London wedding at Pedro’s Wine Bar also featured a brilliant caricaturist. This couple hired David Groves for their Cedar Roof Barn wedding in Sussex. As a documentary wedding photographer I also appreciate any wedding guest entertainment that creates awesome reactions for me to shoot!

Hiring a pizza van for wedding food
Pizza vans and food trucks at weddings are becoming increasingly popular. They are perfect for weddings where there is little to no kitchen space on site. Sometimes if caterers have to come into an unknown space and work with venue kitchens, it can be tricky for them to ensure they have the right equipment. Having a self contained food truck means you know they have everything they need to produce a flawless dinner service. This couple hired Flanco Pizza for the wedding dinner and Scoops Tricycles for dessert. The ice cream was amazing, they had interesting artisanal flavours, I would definitely recommend both the pizza and ice cream vendor for weddings.

Wedding Drag Bingo with Big Taystee
The last time I photographed drag queens at a wedding it was in Walthamstow. They ran both a DJ service, live lip sync performances and a catwalk game. Bigg Taystee is a comedian who runs drag bingo, hilariously rude and entertaining for all the guests young and old! There were also prizes, including a cool Bigg Taystee t shirt! Before the drag bingo evening the couple smashed a Swedish horse piñata nicknamed Sven!
